15 years ago, on a visit to Bob Marley’s house in Kingston, Jamaica, while sitting under the same tall trees Marley wrote many of his songs, looking toward the misty blue mountains, I had a vision. Or perhaps it was mere idolatry. I admired Bob’s healthy lifestyle, his generosity & service, & the way his home was a compound for creativity, community, & the cultivation of food, flowers, & good vibes. Shortly after that vision, using earnings from my first album, I bought The Mranch, a 5-acre agricultural lot on the edge of San Diego complete with a 1977 mission style home, a detached garage suitable for music, & a few dozen aging avocado trees. Thru the years, the house & studio & trees have received lots of love & attention, serving many lives & missions. Like Marley’s home, our compound has produced myriad songs, albums, events, dinners, & personal transformations. 5 years ago we expanded, acquiring an adjacent lot, greatly increasing our efforts in food production. Today we employ many in various fields of craft. Avocados are still the oldest & most revered crops here & it’s an honor to care for them & share the fruit with our family & friends near & far. I still listen to Bob Marley, gratefully, finding both solace & guidance in his music, continually renewing the original vision to live, love, & serve generously. Thanks Bob.
